Tinubu celebrates former President Obasanjo on 89th birthday

President Bola Tinubu has felicitated former President and elder statesman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as he turns 89 on March 5, 2026.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday, Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s towering influence in Nigeria, Africa, and beyond, highlighting his courage, sacrifices, and dedication to nation-building.
The President recalled Obasanjo’s historic roles, including serving as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979—during which he handed over power to a civilian government—and later as the country’s first civilian president in the Fourth Republic from 1999 to 2007.
Tinubu also noted Obasanjo’s leadership during times of national crisis, including commanding troops to preserve Nigeria’s unity, enduring imprisonment for standing against tyranny, and advocating for Africa’s political and economic interests.
“As Chief Obasanjo turns 89, we acknowledge the zeal and wisdom he has brought to Nigeria’s development through his books and interventions, reflecting his deep patriotism,” the President said. He prayed for the former leader to enjoy continued health, strength, and wisdom as he continues to serve the nation and humanity.
