Tinubu committed to press freedom, media growth – information minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says Nigeria’s media industry has confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s capacity to lead the country toward sustainable growth and national development.

Idris made this known on Friday at the State House in Abuja when President Tinubu received top representatives of the Nigerian media industry.

Those present included executives from the Nigeria Press Organisation (NPO), Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), among others.

According to the Minister, the current administration fully appreciates the vital role of the media in strengthening democracy, promoting transparency, and supporting national progress.

He also revealed that the Federal Government has begun discussions with major global technology firms such as Meta and Google over concerns about their growing influence and impact on Nigeria’s media landscape.

“All relevant regulatory agencies are already engaging these big technology companies. The President is determined to ensure that no organisation benefits from Nigeria’s economy without making meaningful contributions in return,” Idris said.

The Minister further reassured media stakeholders of the administration’s commitment to protecting press freedom, stressing that the President has never attempted to interfere with media operations.
