Tinubu congratulates Okonjo-Iweala, Adeola, Adesina on honorary doctorate awards

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization; Mr. Fola Adeola, co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc; and Mr. Kola Adesina, Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, on receiving honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The three distinguished Nigerians were awarded Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) honorary degrees during the university’s 55th convocation ceremony held on January 16, 2025.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala was honored for her groundbreaking role as the first African woman to lead the World Trade Organization and for her impactful reforms in Nigeria’s financial sector.
Mr. Adeola was recognized for his pioneering contributions to Nigeria’s banking industry and his philanthropic initiatives through the FATE Foundation, an NGO empowering young entrepreneurs.
Mr. Adesina, an alumnus of UNILAG, was celebrated for his transformative work in the energy sector as Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, which operates in 42 countries.
In a statement, President Tinubu praised the honorees for their outstanding achievements and their dedication to national development.
“Your pursuit of excellence, hard work, and commitment to advancing Nigeria’s economic growth make you true role models for our youth and the entire nation,” the President said.
In a congratulatory letter to Mr. Adesina, Tinubu commended his contributions to sustainable power solutions and innovation in Nigeria’s energy sector.
“This honorary degree is a testament to your visionary leadership and tireless efforts in transforming the energy industry,” the letter read.
The President urged the honorees to continue serving as beacons of hope and inspiration for future generations, emphasizing that their contributions are deeply valued by the Nigerian government and its people.
He also wished them continued success in their respective fields.
