Tinubu meets APC governors ahead of NEC meeting

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday night held a closed-door meeting with governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), just hours ahead of a crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) session expected to shape the party’s future direction.

The meeting, which began at 7:00 p.m. inside the Presidential Banquet Hall at the Aso Rock Villa, was led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji were among the early arrivals spotted by reporters.

Sources close to the talks said President Tinubu used the meeting to brief the governors on his position ahead of the NEC meeting scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the State House Conference Centre.

Top on the NEC agenda is the appointment of a substantive National Chairman to replace Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who stepped down last month citing health concerns.

The leadership vacuum has reignited calls from the North-Central bloc of the party, which claims marginalisation and is pushing for the chairmanship to return to the region.

Thursday’s NEC session is also expected to deliberate on the party’s financial position and lay the groundwork for its 2027 general election strategy, including a possible timetable.
