Tinubu promises fairer tax system, relief for low-income earners at 65th Independence Anniversary

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that ongoing tax reforms are not designed to increase the burden on existing taxpayers but to expand the tax base and provide relief for low-income earners.

He gave the assurance on Wednesday while delivering his nationwide address to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.

“The tax law is not about increasing the burden on existing taxpayers but about expanding the base to build the Nigeria we deserve and providing tax relief to low-income earners,” the President said.

Tinubu noted that broadening the tax net would help strengthen government revenues and ensure fairer contributions while protecting vulnerable groups in society.

On June 26, 2025, President Tinubu signed four landmark tax reform bills into law—the Nigeria Tax Bill (Ease of Doing Business), Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill—aimed at simplifying tax laws, curbing multiple taxation, and broadening the tax base.

The reforms, which replace the Federal Inland Revenue Service with the new Nigeria Revenue Service, are designed to enhance transparency, improve revenue collection, and provide relief for low-income earners while strengthening cooperation across federal, state, and local governments. The new laws will take effect from January 1, 2026.
