Tragedy as 21-year-old Nigerian footballer Victor Udoh dies in Abuja

Former Southampton and Royal Antwerp forward Victor Udoh has died at the age of 21 in Abuja, with circumstances surrounding his death described as suspicious.

Udoh was reportedly found dead in the Federal Capital Territory, although authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of death as of the time of filing this report.

The young striker had recently returned to Nigeria following the conclusion of his spell with Czech club Dynamo České Budějovice, which he joined after leaving Southampton in 2025.

Udoh signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Southampton but spent about seven months at the English club without making a senior appearance before departing by mutual consent in search of regular playing time.

Prior to his move to England, he featured for Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where he progressed through the ranks after joining from Abuja-based Hypebuzz Academy.

At Royal Antwerp, he impressed at reserve level, scoring 12 goals in 21 appearances, and later made 28 first-team appearances for the club.

He was regarded as one of Nigeria’s promising young football talents during his early career in Europe, attracting interest from several clubs before joining Southampton.

Authorities have not released further details, while investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
