Troops repel terrorist attack on military base in Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State.

The attack occurred at about 12:30am on Thursday, when insurgents attempted to breach the defensive perimeter of the military formation.

According to a statement by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, troops responded swiftly, engaging the attackers with superior firepower and forcing them to retreat.

The statement noted that the troops, led by Brigade Commander Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, displayed courage and professionalism, leaving the insurgents to flee in disarray.

It added that the attack reflected the desperation of terrorist elements who have continued to launch assaults despite suffering setbacks in recent operations.

However, the military confirmed that the encounter resulted in the loss of some soldiers who died in the line of duty.

“The encounter regrettably resulted in the loss of a few brave and gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. Their courage will forever remain a source of pride and inspiration to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the entire nation,” the statement read.

The Armed Forces further disclosed that clearance operations were ongoing to track fleeing insurgents and reiterated its commitment to restoring peace in the North-East.
