Wike explains Abuja water shortage, promises swift completion of plant repairs

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained that the ongoing water shortage in the Abuja City Centre and some satellite towns is due to the rehabilitation of two out of the four water treatment plants that supply water to residents.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike clarified that only Phases 3 and 4 of the water treatment plants are currently operational. Phases 1 and 2 have been shut down for critical rehabilitation.
According to the Minister, the rehabilitation was necessary due to inefficiencies and reduced output in the aging infrastructure. The upgrade, being carried out by SCC Nigeria Limited, has reached an advanced stage and involves replacing key electro-mechanical components essential to the treatment process.
Wike emphasized that the shutdown is partial, not total, as two plants remain functional—though they are unable to meet the full water demand. To manage the shortfall, the FCT Water Board has introduced a water rationing schedule, alternating supply between Lines 1 and 2.
To reduce the impact on residents, particularly during the upcoming Sallah celebrations, the two plants under rehabilitation will be temporarily brought back into operation. Olayinka advised residents to store enough water to meet their needs during this period.
The Minister appealed for patience, assuring residents that the repairs are being expedited and are expected to be completed within two weeks to fully restore service.
