Tinubu commissions ₦280bn Bodo-Bonny Road after 76-year wait

President Bola Tinubu has commissioned the 37.9-kilometre Bodo-Bonny Road in Rivers State, ending a 76-year wait for a direct road connection between Bonny Island and the mainland.

The road, conceived in 1950, was completed at a cost of ₦280bn and commissioned on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

The project features approximately three kilometres of bridges across the Opobo Channel, providing Bonny communities with direct access to Bodo and the wider road network.

Speaking at the commissioning, Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the President had also approved an extension of the road to the East-West Road.

“In a further demonstration of his commitment to expanding road connectivity, President Tinubu has also approved an additional 8.9-kilometre dual carriageway extension, translating to 17.8 kilometres using reinforced concrete pavement to connect the road to the East-West Road,” Umahi said.

He said the extension would improve connectivity, ease transportation and create greater economic opportunities for communities and businesses along the route.

“At an average cost of approximately ₦7.4bn per kilometre, the project is a major engineering investment, particularly with the construction of the extensive bridges across the Opobo Channel,” the minister added.
