Egypt sack Hassan, appoint Ali Maher as new head coach

Egypt have parted ways with head coach Hossam Hassan, with Ali Maher named as his replacement, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Saturday.

Hassan, 60, had renewed his contract until 2030 after guiding Egypt to the round of 16 at this year’s World Cup. However, the EFA said the decision to end his tenure followed a review of recent developments.

In a statement, the federation thanked Hassan for his contributions and wished him success in the next stage of his career. It also confirmed Maher’s appointment as head coach of the national team.

Under Hassan, Egypt recorded their first-ever World Cup victory against New Zealand before defeating Australia on penalties in the round of 32. However, they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the last 16 after surrendering an early lead.

His tenure also came under scrutiny following Egypt’s goalless home draw against Angola in a September Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Hassan attracted criticism after substituting talisman Mohamed Salah in the 60th minute.

The Trabzonspor forward subsequently left the national team camp, with the EFA explaining that he avoids playing on artificial pitches and would therefore miss the subsequent match against South Sudan.

EFA President Hany Abo Rida travelled to Turkey earlier this month to meet with Salah. Maher, 52, takes over following an impressive spell in charge of Ceramica Cleopatra.

Hassan’s departure comes after 38 matches in charge, during which he recorded 21 victories, 10 draws and seven defeats. He also received a three-match FIFA ban for criticising the referee following Egypt’s defeat to Argentina at the World Cup.

Egypt are scheduled to face Malawi twice this month in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
