The Edo State Government has unveiled empowerment materials and healthcare support for special needs schools as part of efforts to improve opportunities and the quality of life for children living with autism and other disabilities.

The initiative was announced at the 2026 Edo State Autism Awareness and Special Needs Schools Empowerment Programme, organised by the Ministry of Health at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub, Benin City.

Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, said the programme, themed “Autism and Humanity: Every Life Has Value,” was designed to promote acceptance, dignity and equal opportunities for children with special needs.

Anani disclosed that the government was working with the Ministry of Education to simplify the curriculum for children with autism. She added that further details would be presented at an upcoming stakeholders’ meeting.

She also urged parents to seek support for their children without fear of stigma or discrimination.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomole, called for the inclusion of autistic persons in decisions affecting their lives, urging employers, community and religious leaders to challenge misconceptions and promote greater acceptance.

Similarly, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, announced plans to introduce weekly Saturday sports activities for children with special needs, with coaches and other necessary support to be provided.

The event featured performances by students and the distribution of educational materials, therapy aids and healthcare equipment to four special needs institutions: Glory Cloud Montessori Special Need School, Roseluyi Exceptional Student Academy, Project Charilove and Salem Montessori Special Needs School.
