Women’s U-17 World Cup: Flamingos battle France in must-win game

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, face a tough test today (Wednesday) as they take on France in a Group D fixture at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Following a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Canada in their opening match, the Flamingos are under pressure to secure a positive result against one of Europe’s strongest youth sides. Anything short of a draw could severely dent their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Despite the heavy loss, coach Bankole Olowookere’s team showed attacking intent, registering 17 shots and creating several opportunities. However, defensive lapses and poor decision-making at crucial moments proved costly, exposing weaknesses at the back.
Olowookere is expected to demand greater tactical discipline from his players, especially in defence, where the Canadians repeatedly exploited open spaces. He may adopt a more conservative setup to contain France’s pace and structured pressing.
Team captain Shakirat Moshood will be pivotal in linking defence and attack from midfield, while goalkeeper Elizabeth Boniface remains a key figure after making several crucial saves in the opener. Forwards Nwachukwu and Olanrewaju will also be relied upon to unlock France’s defence with their creativity and energy.
France, meanwhile, approach the encounter in high spirits after a 4-2 victory over Samoa. With a blend of tactical organisation and attacking flair, the French are among the tournament favourites. Their speed in transition and ability to stretch defences could pose major problems for the Flamingos if Nigeria fail to stay compact.
Olowookere may turn to early substitutions to maintain energy levels throughout the match, having seen his side tire in the later stages against Canada.
For Nigeria, the stakes are high — a win could reignite their World Cup campaign and boost morale, while another defeat would likely end their tournament hopes. The match kicks off at 5 p.m. Nigerian time.
