World TB Day 2026: Oluremi Tinubu urges increased funding, early detection to end tuberculosis

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, has called for intensified efforts to strengthen domestic financing, improve awareness, and expand access to quality tuberculosis (TB) treatment as the country joins the global community to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day 2026.
In her message on Tuesday to mark the day, themed “Yes! We Can End TB,” the First Lady emphasised that although tuberculosis is both preventable and treatable, it continues to impact thousands of Nigerian families, stressing the need for renewed commitment from government, health stakeholders, and communities.
She highlighted key priority areas including increased local funding for TB programmes, improved public awareness, early detection of cases, better access to quality treatment, and the elimination of stigma that discourages many patients from seeking medical care.
According to her, Nigeria has made noticeable progress with a reduction in new TB cases, but more work remains to be done to fully eliminate the disease.
“We must intensify efforts to boost domestic financing, raise awareness, expand early detection, strengthen access to quality treatment, and eliminate the stigma that prevents many from seeking care,” she stated.
Senator Tinubu also noted that the current administration’s political commitment, combined with stronger community engagement and shared national responsibility, provides hope that Nigeria can meet the global target of ending tuberculosis by 2030.
She urged Nigerians to support ongoing efforts by health authorities and development partners to accelerate progress against the disease.
World Tuberculosis Day is commemorated annually on March 24 to raise awareness about the global fight against TB and to mobilize support toward ending the epidemic
