As the 3rd Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics kicks off this weekend, Honourable Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, has promised that this year’s tournament will feature even more glamorous activities than in previous years.
Igali made this statement during an appearance on Radio Bayelsa 97.1 FM, a Yenagoa-based station, on Friday. He emphasized that the annual Wrestling Classics aims to blend the worlds of sport and entertainment, contributing to a vibrant wrestling community.
The President of the NWF also highlighted the federation’s commitment to promoting access to wrestling and engaging fans to create a positive impact within the sport.
“This is our National Championship, and we will use this event to select the athletes who will represent us in Casablanca next year for the African Championships,” Igali stated. “This Classics will feature various categories of wrestling, including Greco-Roman, men’s freestyle, and women’s freestyle, with 10 weight classes in each.”
He added, “We have many stars to watch out for. Esther Kolawole recently won a bronze medal at the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Albania, along with Mercy Genesis, Hannah Reuben, Ogunsanya Christianah, Stephen from Bayelsa, and many other rising talents.”
Igali also mentioned plans for fan engagement, including a raffle draw with exciting prizes. He encouraged everyone to attend and experience one of the biggest sporting events in the country.
The 3rd Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics will see athletes arriving on November 3rd, followed by an AGM and technical meetings on November 4th. The competitions will begin on November 5th with Greco-Roman wrestling taking center stage, and the opening ceremony will be held the following day.
