The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has released the final list of candidates contesting chairmanship and councillorship positions in the December 29, 2026, local government elections.
The commission’s Chairman, Dr. Afees Adeniyi, announced the release on Tuesday, October 27, during an interactive meeting with electoral officers and assistant electoral officers at its headquarters in Ibadan.
Adeniyi said the commission had made significant progress towards conducting the third consecutive local government election under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde. He disclosed that nine of the 15 activities outlined in the revised election timetable had been completed.
Following the announcement, the chairman presented copies of the final list to electoral officers and their assistants for display at OYSIEC offices across the state. He directed them to ensure that the list was displayed without delay, with the exercise scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 28.
Adeniyi explained that the commission’s members had reviewed the final list submitted by political parties in line with the established electoral process. He added that the meeting was organised to strengthen communication between the commission’s leadership and electoral officers and address issues that could affect the smooth conduct of the elections.
The OYSIEC chairman also assured stakeholders of their involvement in the electoral process, expressing confidence in the commission’s preparations. He commended Makinde for his interest in the elections and approval of funds for their conduct.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Electoral Officers Forum, Dr. Olusegun Odekunle, pledged the commitment of electoral officers and their assistants to ensuring a successful exercise. He also praised the commission’s leadership for securing a review of their allowances by the state government and pursuing other welfare packages.
The December 29 polls will determine those who occupy chairmanship and councillorship positions across Oyo State’s local government areas. The release of the final candidates’ list marks another step in the electoral process as OYSIEC works towards completing the remaining activities on its revised timetable.
