Oluremi Tinubu unveils N110m support package for elderly, persons with disabilities

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has unveiled a N110 million empowerment package for elderly citizens and persons with disabilities in each participating senatorial district under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

She urged All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidates to coordinate the distribution of the funds, stressing that beneficiaries must be selected without discrimination based on political affiliation, religion or ethnicity.

The package comprises N55 million each for the RHI Economic Empowerment Programme for Persons with Disabilities and the RHI Elderly Support Scheme, with 250 beneficiaries in each category expected to receive N200,000 per senatorial district.

Mrs Tinubu announced the initiative on Thursday at a stakeholders’ meeting attended by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, members of the National Assembly, APC senatorial candidates and members of the RHI governing board.

She said the decision to involve senatorial candidates followed consultations with political leaders on the most effective way to identify vulnerable Nigerians and ensure the assistance reached those who needed it.

The First Lady said the candidates’ knowledge of their constituencies would help improve beneficiary selection, coordination and public awareness of the initiative.

“We don’t say give it only to party members, but give it to your voters,” she told the candidates, urging them to ensure that deserving Nigerians benefited regardless of their political affiliations.

She said the intervention reflected her commitment to supporting vulnerable groups, drawing on her experience in public service and empowerment initiatives during her 12 years in the Senate.

“The vulnerable in society are the people we are supposed to care for,” she said.
