Afenifere tasks Southwest governors to tackle rising insecurity swiftly

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has raised fresh concerns over worsening insecurity in the South-West, urging governors in the region to take urgent action.
The call was contained in a communiqué issued after a caucus meeting held at the residence of its leader, Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure.
The communiqué, signed by National Publicity Secretary Jare Ajayi, followed deliberations by members drawn from across Yorubaland.
Accordingly, the group expressed deep concern over increasing terror activities in the region, describing the security situation as alarming.
It therefore urged governors to strengthen local security outfits, particularly the Amotekun Corps, and improve surveillance across their states.
Furthermore, Afenifere called for closer collaboration with neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta to address the exploitation of forest borders by criminal elements.
While acknowledging the efforts of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies, the group commended the military for its sacrifices and condoled with families of fallen soldiers.
The organisation further urged political actors to ensure peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections and reiterated its call for restructuring as a key step toward national development.
