Akwa Ibom to open 350-bed specialist hospital as Eno woos Ethiopian Airlines

Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced that the state’s 350-bed quaternary hospital located along the medical corridor will be officially unveiled on June 23, 2026.

The governor made the disclosure on Saturday at a special dinner organised in honour of a team from the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo, stating that the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, will inaugurate the facility, which will house 24 critical departments, including oncology services.

Eno also highlighted other flagship projects being executed by his administration, including a 5,000-capacity International Convention Centre, a 250-room International Hotel and a world-class Shopping City, describing them as part of efforts to build a tourism-driven economy and reduce dependence on oil revenue.

The governor further revealed that Ibom Air would commence twice-weekly international flights from Uyo to Ghana on June 28, while discussions were ongoing with Ethiopian Airlines to begin operating flights between Uyo and Addis Ababa twice weekly.

“We believe that Akwa Ibom will be a State to watch as we go into the coming days, months, and years because we are taking tourism development and growth to a different viable and superlative dimension. All we are doing in Akwa Ibom State is to create an alternative to oil, and we are very intentional about it,” he said.

According to him, the state is currently executing 85 major projects without borrowing from any bank, while more than 1,368 kilometres of roads and 40 bridges have either been completed or are at different stages of completion to improve connectivity across the state.

The governor commended the RMAFC team for its commitment to its constitutional responsibilities, while Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, described Akwa Ibom as “the best-kept secret of Nigeria” and praised the administration’s prudent management of public resources.

Speaking on behalf of the commission, the team leader, Prof. Olusegun Adekunle Wright, lauded Governor Eno’s leadership and the cordial relationship between the state government and RMAFC, while appreciating the hospitality extended to the delegation during its visit.
