Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will compete with 15 other African nations for a spot at the 2027 FIBA World Cup, with qualifiers set to begin in November.

After securing a place at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket in Angola (August 12-24), D’Tigers now turn their focus to the World Cup in Qatar. Nigeria has qualified for the tournament three times, reaching the round of 16 in 2006 but missing out on the 2023 edition co-hosted by Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The 16 teams in the qualifiers include Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Rwanda, Senegal, South Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda.

The qualification draw, which will determine the teams’ paths to the tournament, is scheduled for May 13.

At the last FIBA World Cup, Africa was represented by Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Cape Verde, and South Sudan, with the latter two making their debuts.
