The family of late former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and a wide range of national and international dignitaries for their overwhelming support during his burial and period of mourning.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Garba Shehu, former spokesperson to the late president, described the show of solidarity as “comforting and deeply reassuring,” adding that the family felt honored by the widespread condolences and kind gestures from across the globe.
“We are deeply grateful to President Tinubu for his thoughtful actions, including declaring a public holiday and renaming the University of Maiduguri in honor of Muhammadu Buhari,” Shehu said. “The presence and support of the Vice President, who traveled to the UK and later Daura, were particularly heartening during this difficult time.”
The family also acknowledged messages and visits from world leaders such as King Charles III of the United Kingdom, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, the African Union Chairperson, ECOWAS leaders, and Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
They expressed gratitude to governors from across the federation, traditional rulers, and religious leaders of all faiths for their solidarity. Daura noted that their presence helped ease the burden of mourning and demonstrated a united national spirit.
Among those specially recognized were Governors Dikko Radda (Katsina), Babagana Zulum (Borno), and other sitting and former governors from Adamawa, Kano, Kwara, Lagos, Kaduna, Imo, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kebbi. Former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar, Namadi Sambo, Yemi Osinbajo, and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe also sent condolences.
Prominent business figures including Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, Muhammadu Indimi, Dahiru Mangal, Kola Adesina, and Nasiru Danu were commended for their personal visits, support, and heartfelt messages to the family.
“The family has been overwhelmed by the surge of love from across Nigeria and beyond. Religious leaders, community groups, political figures, civil servants, and ordinary Nigerians — your presence and prayers have given us strength and comfort in this time of loss,” Shehu concluded.
