EFCC dismisses Malami’s claim of politically motivated bail revocation

By Kunle Sanni –

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims by former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, that his bail was revoked over his attendance at a political gathering in Kebbi State, describing the allegation as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the anti-graft agency said it was compelled to respond to Malami’s claims, despite its usual reluctance to engage in media exchanges over ongoing investigations.

According to the EFCC, Malami was granted administrative bail on November 28, 2025, after a brief interrogation, pending the conclusion of investigations and possible arraignment in court. The commission explained that the bail was provisional and subject to five conditions, none of which the former minister has fulfilled.

The EFCC stated that Malami was expected to report back for further interrogation on December 1, 2025, but requested an adjournment on health grounds through a letter dated December 4, 2025. It said the request was granted, even though the bail conditions remained unmet.

However, the commission noted that Malami neither submitted a medical report nor provided credible evidence of ill health to justify his continued absence.

“The EFCC cannot allow the latitude granted the former minister on health grounds to stand in the way of investigations,” the statement said, adding that he was subsequently invited again on December 8, 2025, for further interrogation and was detained pending compliance with the outstanding bail conditions.

The commission described as “untenable” Malami’s claim that his bail was revoked, stressing that the issue was his failure to meet the agreed conditions. It also rejected allegations that he was barred from granting media interviews or participating in political activities, saying it has no interest in the political affiliations of suspects.

Reiterating its apolitical stance, the EFCC noted that a former governor and senior member of the ruling party was recently arraigned for alleged contract fraud, underscoring that its actions are driven solely by law and evidence.
