The Ekiti State Government has employed 5,530 teachers for public primary and secondary schools in the state over the last four years, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has said.
Oyebanji disclosed this on Monday at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Ekitiparapo Pavilion in Ado Ekiti, where his administration also rewarded outstanding teachers and other education workers with N70.5 million.
The governor said the recruitment exercise was conducted through the Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission and the State Universal Basic Education Board, with 430 teachers employed in 2022, 500 in 2023/2024 and 1,600 in 2025/2026 through the commission.
He added that SUBEB recruited 1,500 teachers in 2022/2023 and another 1,500 in 2026, bringing the total number of teachers employed by the state government during the period to 5,530.
Oyebanji said the cash awards were presented to teachers and other education workers recognised for exceptional dedication and performance across the state’s 16 local government areas.
He also said the government had upgraded all 203 public secondary schools with information and communication technology laboratories, interactive boards and 5KVA inverters, while 125 schools had been provided with internet access.
The governor added that several school buildings had been renovated, while perimeter fencing had been constructed at 54 public secondary schools, with closed-circuit television cameras installed in 48 schools and plans underway to install them in 85 more schools.
Oyebanji assured teachers that his administration would sustain regular payment of salaries and continue to provide welfare support, including revolving car and housing loans for eligible secondary school teachers. Reacting, the state chapters of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools commended the initiatives but called for the payment of outstanding entitlements and other promised welfare packages.
