Ondo govt traces Alagbaka odour to poultry, goat farm

The Ondo State Government has traced the persistent offensive odour around Alagbaka G.R.A. Extension, Akure, to waste allegedly discharged from a nearby poultry and goat farm.

The discovery followed complaints from the management and staff of Crest 106.1 FM, who said the unpleasant smell had made the station’s environment uncomfortable for workers, guests and visitors.

Following the complaints, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, led officials of the ministry, including the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Akin Omotola, on an inspection of the affected area on Monday.

The inspection team traced the suspected source of the odour from the radio station through Rev. Remi Olu Adegboyegun Avenue and MBC Akinbileje Avenue before arriving at the livestock farm.

According to the ministry, officials discovered that waste from the farm’s livestock operations was being discharged through a pipe into the drainage system, allowing the effluent to flow towards adjoining residential and business premises.

The government said the discharge was responsible for the offensive odour spreading through the drainage network and affecting the surrounding environment, including the radio station.

Following the discovery, Loko directed the issuance of an abatement notice to the operator of the facility and warned that the government would not tolerate activities capable of polluting the environment or posing a threat to public health.

The commissioner urged residents, businesses and institutions to report environmental violations, assuring them that the ministry would investigate credible complaints and take necessary regulatory action against offenders.
