Falcons ready for Comoros clash despite key withdrawals – Eguavoen

By Tosin Omojola
Interim Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen has dismissed concerns that the withdrawal of key players could affect the Super Falcons’ chances against Comoros in the 2028 Olympic Women’s Football Tournament qualifiers.
Nigeria will face Comoros in a two-leg second-round tie at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo, on October 9 and 13, with both matches hosted in Nigeria because Comoros lack a standard football pitch.
Eguavoen acknowledged the withdrawals of Asisat Oshoala, Ashley Plumptre and Oluwatosin Demehin but expressed confidence in their replacements.
“It is true that we have a number of withdrawals… However, I have confidence in their replacements, as they also have the quality and experience to contribute meaningfully to the team’s success against Comoros,” he said.
The coach added that the team had settled well in camp and was focused on producing a strong performance in both matches.
Only Belarus-based forward Blessing Okpe, a late invitee, is still expected in camp.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade will lead the Falcons as they target a second consecutive Olympic appearance after featuring at Paris 2024.
The 10-time African champions will advance to the third round, scheduled for March 2027, if they defeat Comoros on aggregate.
