FG reaffirms commitment to national cohesion, digital security

By Kunle Sanni –
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has stated that the federal government remains firmly committed to strengthening truthful broadcasting, combating misinformation, and protecting Nigeria’s digital information space from external distortions.
Speaking at the 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN), held at the DAAR Communications Headquarters in Abuja, Idris described the media as a frontline defender of the nation’s information sovereignty and unity.
The conference, themed “Broadcasting for Information Sovereignty, National Cohesion, and Digital Security,” aligns closely, he said, with the Tinubu administration’s push to rebuild public trust and entrench fact-based national dialogue.

According to the minister, the administration’s reforms have begun to yield significant results, noting that inflation has dropped to a three-year low of 16 percent, food prices are declining, and Nigeria’s foreign reserves have risen to $46.7 billion — the highest in seven years.
“These outcomes are not accidental,” Idris said. “They are the result of deliberate, tough, and necessary choices the president has taken to reposition our economy for long-term prosperity. The media must help Nigerians appreciate these gains.”
On security, he said the government has restructured the national security framework and improved coordination among agencies, resulting in weakened criminal networks. He cited the recent conviction of a senior ISWAP commander, who received a 20-year prison sentence, as evidence of the enhanced operational capacity of the country’s intelligence and prosecution systems.
Idris criticised what he described as attempts by certain foreign actors to portray Nigeria as a nation plagued by religious intolerance, insisting that such claims are misleading and aimed at undermining national unity.
“Nigeria’s diversity is our strength,” he said. “Any report suggesting otherwise is designed to divide us. This is where IBAN and the broadcast community must stand tall.”
