Gavi approves $500m vaccine, primary healthcare support for Nigeria
Nigeria has secured nearly $500 million in funding from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to strengthen routine immunisation and primary healthcare over the 2026–2030 period.
The funding was approved under Gavi’s new 6.0 programme following a meeting between the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and Gavi Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sania Nishtar, in Abuja.
The package is expected to support routine immunisation, expand the rollout of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, sustain gains made in polio eradication and strengthen long-term vaccine financing in the country.
Speaking after the meeting, Pate said the five-year funding commitment would improve planning and ensure a more reliable supply of life-saving vaccines.
“We are deepening our partnership with Gavi to accelerate immunisation, broaden primary healthcare services and ensure sustainable financing for vaccines,” he said.
The minister welcomed Gavi’s adoption of a predictable five-year funding model, saying it would enable federal and state governments to better plan vaccine procurement and distribution.
He also highlighted improvements in the utilisation of primary healthcare centres, noting that quarterly visits had increased from about 10 million in 2023 to more than 45 million.
According to him, the increase reflects the impact of ongoing reforms aimed at revitalising community healthcare services across the country.
