Jubilation in Abeokuta as National Sports Festival kicks off


The ancient city of Abeokuta, Ogun State, came alive on Friday as the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, began with the arrival of contingents from across the country.
Following earlier postponements, the long-anticipated competition is finally underway, drawing thousands of male and female athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, to vie for medals in various sports.
From Friday, May 16 to Friday, May 30, Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ikenne, and other parts of Ogun State will host vibrant sporting activities at designated venues.
Widely regarded as Nigeria’s version of the Olympics, the Gateway Games is expected to maintain high standards, thanks to the Ogun State Government’s preparations in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC).
First held in Lagos in 1973, the National Sports Festival has produced athletes who have gone on to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
Given the level of readiness and competition expected, the 2024 edition is projected to unveil more future stars.
The official opening ceremony will take place on Sunday at the renovated M.K.O. Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, featuring a colourful parade and other attractions.
Athletes, donning their state colours, will aim for podium finishes to bring glory to their states and boost their own careers through outstanding performances.
