The Palace of the Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure Kingdom has announced that all markets, stalls, and shops in Akure will be closed on Thursday, August 14, 2025, in observance of the annual Aheregbe Festival.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deji of Akure, Adeyeye Michael, the closure is part of the age-long tradition marking the festival.
The palace stressed that there would be no trading nor shop openings under any guise throughout the day.
Residents, traders, and shop owners were urged to comply fully with the directive to ensure the smooth observance of the cultural celebration.
The statement, however, noted that pharmacy shops and patent medicine stores would be exempted from the closure in view of the importance of healthcare services.
Also, the palace clarified that the festival would not affect human and vehicular movement, assuring residents and travellers that regular activities outside the markets and shops would continue unhindered.
“The Aheregbe Festival is one of the most significant traditional events in Akure Kingdom, attracting participation from residents within and beyond the city.”
The palace encouraged the public to respect the cultural heritage and support the successful hosting of the festival.
