Kano Govt approves ₦1m each for families of accident victims

The Kano State Government has approved ₦1 million each for the families of 22 young athletes who died in a motor accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo made the announcement on Saturday during a condolence visit to Nasarawa Hospital, where the remains of the deceased were deposited. He described the tragedy as a heartbreaking loss to Kano and the nation.

“These young men were returning from a national assignment, having represented Kano with distinction. Some were even returning with gold medals. Tragically, their journey was cut short just a few kilometers from home,” Gwarzo said on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The victims were part of Kano’s contingent to the sports festival—a nationwide event aimed at fostering peace, unity, and youth development through sports.

Beyond the monetary support, the state government also pledged to provide food items and relief materials to affected families. Gwarzo added that 20 victims had been identified, while two others were taken home by their families.

The Deputy Governor also visited Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where seven injured athletes are being treated. He assured them of the government’s full support and commitment to their recovery.

Governor Yusuf, through his deputy, ordered the immediate release of funds for both the deceased and the injured, calling for a compassionate and coordinated response to the tragedy.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. May Allah forgive their shortcomings and grant them Jannatul Firdaus,” Gwarzo said, as the government reaffirmed its commitment to standing by the families through their journey of healing.
