Kogi intercepts arms cache, foils alleged retaliatory attack, arrests 3 suspects

Security agencies in Kogi State have intercepted a cache of arms and ammunition allegedly destined for criminal groups, in what officials describe as a major disruption of planned retaliatory attacks within the state.

The operation involved coordinated efforts between local security operatives, the Hybrid Forces under the Office of the National Security Adviser Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services (DSS) Department of State Services, and the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army 12 Brigade Nigerian Army.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the state government, intelligence tracked a Volkswagen Golf 2 vehicle allegedly used to move weapons across state lines. Three suspects were later arrested in Sokoto State Sokoto State after weeks of surveillance, while the vehicle was intercepted in Kabba, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State Kogi State.

Recovered items reportedly include two AK-47 rifles, several magazines, 67 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, two pistols, and military-style uniforms suspected to be intended for criminal operations.

Officials said the weapons were part of efforts by armed groups to rearm after recent losses in security operations, including the killing of a suspected bandit leader known as Kachalla Battijo during a failed kidnapping attempt in Iluke Bunu.

A senior government official described the operation as a result of proactive intelligence work and inter-agency collaboration.

“Kogi State is not and will never be a safe haven for terrorism, banditry, kidnapping or any form of criminality,” the statement declared.

The government said intelligence gathering had been intensified to anticipate possible reprisals.

“We have expanded our intelligence network, strengthened surveillance operations and are working closely with security agencies to intercept criminal movements before execution,” the statement added.
