Lagos landlords receive over ₦3.1bn compensation for acquired properties

The Lagos State Government has disbursed more than ₦3.1 billion in compensation to over 300 landowners whose properties were acquired for public infrastructure projects across the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this on Monday during the presentation of compensation cheques to the beneficiaries. At the event, Sanwo-Olu said the compensation was both a legal and moral obligation of the government to residents affected by land acquisitions carried out in the public interest.

The governor explained that every compensation claim underwent due process, including enumeration, professional valuation and title verification, to ensure that only rightful beneficiaries received payment. He added that the acquired lands were designated solely for strategic infrastructure projects aimed at improving the quality of life of Lagos residents and not for personal interests.

Sanwo-Olu also advised the beneficiaries to make wise use of the compensation by investing in ventures that would provide long-term security for their families. In addition, he assured them that officials of the Lands Bureau were available to offer professional guidance on documentation and related matters without demanding any form of gratification.

Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat said the compensation exercise demonstrated the administration’s commitment to fulfilling its promises to residents affected by government projects. He noted that ongoing road expansion and other infrastructure projects had significantly reduced travel time across several parts of the state.

Hamzat acknowledged that development projects could affect private properties but assured residents that the government would continue to provide adequate compensation in line with the law. He said the administration remained committed to balancing infrastructure development with the protection of citizens’ rights.

Similarly, the Permanent Secretary of the Lands Bureau, Kamar Olowoshago, described the exercise as a continuation of previous compensation payments. He said it reflected the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and inclusive development, adding that meaningful progress should never come at the expense of justice or the welfare of citizens.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Lands, Olayinka Kazeem, commended the initiative and described it as evidence of a responsive government. He congratulated the beneficiaries and reaffirmed the Assembly’s support for policies that promote equitable development while protecting the rights of residents affected by public projects.
