Lagos moves to beef up cybersecurity via new guidelines

The Lagos State Government has released a comprehensive set of cybersecurity guidelines aimed at improving digital safety for businesses, public institutions, and residents.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, who noted that the initiative is part of efforts to position Lagos as a smart, secure, and globally competitive digital hub.

According to him, as one of Africa’s fastest-growing technology ecosystems, Lagos is increasingly exposed to cyber risks, making proactive measures essential.

He cited estimates by the National Information Technology Development Agency, which indicate that Nigeria loses more than $500 million annually to cybercrime, underscoring the need for coordinated security strategies.

Omotoso added that while the transformation of Lagos into a smart city presents vast opportunities, it also heightens vulnerability to cyber threats.

“The guidelines, available online, provide practical and scalable recommendations for small businesses, large enterprises, and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies,” he said, noting that they align with relevant national frameworks.

He further explained that the document is not regulatory in nature but is designed to equip stakeholders with actionable and context-specific guidance.

Meanwhile, the commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a secure digital environment that supports innovation, investment, and public trust, adding that the initiative reinforces Lagos’ leadership in digital governance.
