LASG, EU deepen ties on sustainable urban development
The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, has hosted a delegation from the European Union on a strategic visit aimed at strengthening collaboration on sustainable urban growth, land use efficiency, and integrated mobility systems.
The meeting, held at the Alausa Secretariat, focused on transport corridor development, urban mobility, and strategies for delivering resilient infrastructure to improve connectivity across the state. Discussions also highlighted the need for innovative planning frameworks to manage rapid urbanisation while ensuring sustainability and economic inclusion.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, called for deeper technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, and investment-driven initiatives to enhance urban resilience and mobility infrastructure in Lagos.
He noted that Lagos remains a key economic hub in West Africa and expressed confidence in the state’s strategic direction toward achieving sustainable physical planning transformation.
Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Engr. Oluwole Sotire, commended the European Union for its continued support for developmental initiatives in the region, noting that Lagos requires forward-looking partnerships to manage its rapid growth effectively.
Sotire added that the state government is committed to implementing policies and master plans that promote orderly development, reduce congestion, and improve residents’ quality of life, stressing that collaboration with global partners is vital to achieving internationally aligned planning standards.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Team Lead Celihe Lhoste said the visit reflects the European Union’s commitment to fostering sustainable cities through strategic partnerships, describing Lagos as a dynamic model of urban growth in Africa.
Other members of the delegation, including Jacques Remy, alongside Director of the Regional and Masterplan Department, Tpl. Adeshina Shobowale, emphasised the importance of integrated planning and called for a unified, comprehensive framework that aligns land use, transportation, and environmental considerations.
