LASU: ASUU, SSANU, NASU declare indefinite strike over salary increment

Academic and non-teaching staff at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, have declared an indefinite strike over the issue of salary increment.
Following the industrial action, academic and administration activities have been crippled on the main campus.
The industrial action followed after the expiration of an ultimatum issued by the three staff unions under the umbrella of Joint Action Committee (JAC).
In a swift reaction, the Students Union in a circular to students urged them to disregard the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU).
It was reported that the strike started on a low key on Friday and expected to be full blown on Monday following the mobilization of members of the three staff unions.
In a statement by ASUU-LASU dated Sunday, December 8th, 2024, said the declaration of the strike is in conformity with the decision of the Joint Action Committee of the three unions in the university.
The statement was signed by the ASUU-LASU chairman, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare and Secretary, Dr. Sylvester Idowu, said the joint signed letter has been sent not only to the vice chancellor but to the visitor, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The letter read: ‘This is to notify the university community and the general public that ASUU-LASU has commenced a total and indefinite strike to protest the non-implementation of the Federal Government approved salary increment of 25%/35% for our members since January 2023.
“We note with dismay that this agreement has been implemented in all the federal universities and 18 state universities as of today.”
ASUU-LASU also stated that another reason for the strike is the upgrade/transformation into university status, the salaries of the staff of Lagos State University of Science and Technology and Lagos State University of Education were higher than those of LASU staff.
The students union asked the students to disregard the industrial action by ASUU-LASU, SSANU and NASU.
Meanwhile, in a post on its Facebook page, the University management declared a Christmas and New Year break, beginning on Monday 9th December (today) and ending on Sunday 5th January 2025.
Students residing in the university’s hostels across all campuses (Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe and Badagry) were directed to vacate the hostels within 48 hours, starting from 8:00 a.m. on Monday, 9th December 2024.
“The Lagos State University Senate has declared a Christmas and New Year break, commencing on Monday, 9th December 2024, and ending on Sunday, 5th January 2025.
“All university activities, including lectures and socio-academic events, will resume on Monday, 6th January 2025.
“All students residing in the university’s hostels across all campuses (Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe and Badagry) are required to vacate the hostels within 48 hours, starting from 8:00 a.m. on Monday, 9th December 2024.
“The university management appreciates the support and dedication of staff and students throughout the year and wishes everyone a joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year”, the statement read.
