Lagos Lawmaker gifts LASU First Class Law graduate N1.5m scholarship

The legislator representing Kosofe constituency 2 in the Lagos state House of Assembly, Hon. Femi Saheed, has gifted a constituent who graduated with First Class in Faculty of Law at the Lagos state University (LASU), Modinat Olowogaba, a sum of N1.5million as scholarship.

Saheed, who presented the cheque to the beneficiary on Friday in Kosofe area of Lagos, said the scholarship was to encourage her to do more as she goes to Law School and also to pass message to others that hardwork pays.

The lawmaker who currently chairs the House Committee on Finance said the quality of Nigeria’s education is not deteriorating as many believe, adding that Nigerian graduates excel when they go abroad.

” I am not of the school of thought that our educational system is deteriorating. Our graduates are excelling abroad and making us proud. Deteriorating educational system cannot produce such wonderfully and successfully graduates who have been being making all proud overseas. It is about our resilience and determination.

” The fact that alot of youths are getting involved in different sectors, be it academic, technology, entertainment, sports and fashion. What we need to do is to celebrate and encourage them”, said Saheed.

He said government is ready to make policies that would create the enabling environment for the youths to thrive in their chosen careers, adding that the state legislators would make sure education is giving priority in Lagos.

The lawmaker promised to give out more scholarships to brilliant constituents, adding that brilliancy should be encouraged among the youths.

Speaking after receiving the cheque, Olowogaba said that she did not expect the scholarship, saying that it was an indication that the Nigerian society still appreciate hardwork.

She narrated her experience during her undergraduate, advising the junior ones to concentrate on their education.

The First Class graduate who lost her father 4years ago said that despite facing serious financial challenges while in school, she made it a responsibility to consistently read her books every day to achieve the First Class grade.

” I want to tell my contemporaries not to give up in the face of obvious challenges. They should concentrate on their studies and not allow the challenges to weigh them down. During my undergraduate, I read alot to achieve my set goals and it eventually pays off. I did not start well in my first year because I had a CGPA I am not proud of, so I kept on reading and studying to ensure i graduate with a CGPA that I will be proud of, which is 4.57. A First Class grade. I give thanks to Almighty Allah, my mother and those who believe in me”, said Olowogaba.

Her mother, Mr Munirat Olowogaba, thanked the lawmaker for the scholarship, advising mothers to always guide and monitor their children while in the higher institution.
