NANS denies NYSC partnership over proposed ₦200 student dues

The National Association of Nigerian Students has denied entering into any agreement or partnership with the National Youth Service Corps for the collection of capitation dues from students, describing reports linking the two organisations as misleading.

The clarification followed a disclaimer issued by the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters over a viral Facebook post by NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez concerning plans to collect the dues directly from students.

In a statement issued Wednesday, NANS said the post was based on an informal discussion and did not represent any agreement between the student body and the NYSC.

The association said, “At no time has NANS announced any partnership with the NYSC for the collection of capitation dues,” adding that the impression created by the publication resulted from misinformation arising from a random Facebook discussion.

NANS said it had a constitutional mandate to collect capitation dues, noting that students already pay Student Union dues on their respective campuses.

However, the association stressed that although it had the right to propose partnerships with government agencies and institutions, it had not made any such proposal to the NYSC regarding the collection of its dues.

“For the avoidance of doubt, NANS has never approached the NYSC for any Memorandum of Understanding, collaboration or partnership over the collection of its capitation dues,” it stated. The student body further stated that it would announce any agency or organisation eventually selected to partner with it on the collection of the dues after necessary arrangements had been concluded.

On Aug. 10, 2026, NANS President Akinteye Babatunde proposed an annual ₦200 due for students, saying payment could be required for graduates seeking mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps scheme.
