NFF approves Sam Okwaraji Memorial Championship to immortalize fallen hero

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially approved the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, a nationwide tournament aimed at immortalizing the late Nigerian international footballer Samuel Okwaraji, who tragically died 36 years ago.
The announcement follows the endorsement of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi, signaling strong institutional support for the initiative.
Okwaraji, a gifted midfielder, collapsed and died on the pitch at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, in August 1989 during a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Angola.
His untimely death at the age of 25 shocked the nation, but his legacy of patriotism and dedication to Nigerian football endures. The Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, which is spearheading the championship, aims to honor his memory by fostering grassroots football development through this annual event.
In a letter signed by Ruth David, the NFF’s Acting Director of Competitions, the federation praised the championship’s objectives, noting its potential to positively impact Nigerian youth and promote football development across the country. The NFF also commended the foundation for its commitment to nurturing young talent and contributing to the sport’s growth at the grassroots level.
The championship, which is set to commence later this year, will adhere to the rules and regulations of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), as emphasized by the NFF. Organizers have been urged to ensure full compliance to maintain the tournament’s integrity and align with global standards.
Okwaraji, who was educated at an Italian university in Rome, exemplified patriotism by prioritizing service to Nigeria over personal gain.
His commitment to the Super Eagles, then known as the Green Eagles, remains a powerful example for Nigerian youth. The championship not only celebrates his legacy but also seeks to inspire future generations to embrace discipline, teamwork, and national pride through football.
