Nigeria cannot fight terrorism alone, Tinubu pursuing global support — information minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said President Bola Tinubu is intensifying efforts to secure regional and international collaboration to address insecurity in Nigeria and promote stability across the Sahel region.

Idris made this known on Sunday after meeting with the President at his Lagos residence, where he emphasised the importance of the recent visit of Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Abuja, describing it as both timely and strategic amid growing security concerns in the region.

According to the Minister, the meeting between President Tinubu and his Chadian counterpart underscores the urgent need for stronger cooperation among Nigeria, Chad and other neighbouring countries to effectively combat terrorism and violent extremism.

He stressed that insecurity in the Sahel requires collective action because terrorism transcends national borders.

“Nigeria is fighting terrorism, and terrorism has no borders, especially with the situation in the Sahel. It is almost impossible for Nigeria to act alone,” Idris said.

He added that discussions between both leaders focused on strengthening security cooperation not only between Nigeria and Chad but also among countries within the region to ensure a coordinated response to security threats.

The Minister also revealed that President Tinubu is expanding engagement beyond Africa by working with international partners such as the European Union, the United Nations, the United States and the United Kingdom to find lasting solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.

Idris noted that security discussions featured prominently during the President’s recent visit to the United Kingdom, where strategies to address insecurity were also explored.
