Tinubu receives proposed $14bn UN budget from Nigeria’s envoy

President Bola Tinubu on Monday received the United Nations’ proposed 2027 budget from Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim, who described the presentation as a historic milestone for the country.

Ibrahim, who chairs the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Matters, presented the seven-volume document to Tinubu after its submission by the UN Secretary-General to the committee.

He said Nigeria’s leadership of the committee, which oversees the organisation’s administrative and budgetary matters, was the first in 66 years.

“This is the first time in 66 years that Nigeria will chair the Budget and Administrative Committee. It is the first time, and we do not know when it will happen again in history,” Ibrahim said.

He added that Tinubu was the first Nigerian president in 66 years to receive the UN budget through the country’s chairmanship of the committee.

According to the envoy, the proposed regular budget is about $3.4 billion, while the peacekeeping budget stands at approximately $8.5 billion.
