Nigeria elected as chair of UN budget and administration committee
Nigeria has achieved a major diplomatic milestone following the election of its representative as Chair of the United Nations Committee on Budget and Administration, also known as the Fifth Committee.
The announcement was made on 2 June 2026, with the Nigerian envoy assuming leadership of one of the UN General Assembly’s most influential committees responsible for budgetary oversight, administrative policy, and human resources across the global body.
Reacting to his election, the newly appointed chair, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, described the development as a significant honour: “It is indeed an honour to be elected as the Chairman of the Budget and the Administration of the United Nations today 2nd June 2026.”
He further expressed appreciation to national leadership, stating: “Let me express my profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed GCFR. Mr President as your student in the reforms class be assured that those teaching slides will reflect in the Budget, Appropriations and Human Resources of the United Nations”
Extending gratitude to citizens, he added: “Let me thank the good people of Nigeria for this historic achievement. I assured my colleagues of 193 member states that at this challenging time in history, it is my responsibility to provide a strategy in a chaotic situation.”
Following the election, he was formally identified as: “Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, Chairman, Committee on Budget and Administration of the United Nations. The 5th Committee”
The Committee on Budget and Administration is a core arm of the United Nations, responsible for examining and approving financial and administrative matters affecting the entire UN system, including staffing and operational budgets.
