No girl should be denied education — Remi Tinubu

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Friday said no girl should be denied access to education because of life’s challenges, including early pregnancy, financial difficulties or discrimination.

Tinubu, represented by the wife of the vice president, Nana Shettima, spoke at the commissioning of the rehabilitated Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu said every girl and woman should be given the opportunity to reach her full potential regardless of the challenges she had faced.

She expressed satisfaction with the rehabilitation of the school through the intervention of the Universal Basic Education Commission, adding that another alternative high school was being constructed in Ikorodu to serve the Lagos East senatorial district, while similar schools had been established in other parts of the country.

She urged the Lagos State Government to establish another alternative high school in Lagos Central and ensure the effective operation and maintenance of the existing schools, while encouraging the students to make the most of the opportunity and remain focused on their future.

Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state’s first lady, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and Commissioner for Basic Education Jamiu Alli-Balogun urged the students not to allow their past or circumstances to determine their future, while 10 outstanding students received gifts for their performance in vocational skills, including hairdressing and gele making. Meanwhile, a deep freezer was donated to the school by Nana Shettima.

The rehabilitated Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Lagos was established in 2007 by President Bola Tinubu, then governor of Lagos State, to provide girls whose education had been interrupted by various challenges with an opportunity to complete their secondary education and acquire vocational skills.
