Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has praised the players in the domestic league, highlighting their technical abilities.
Eguavoen observed 35 invited players competing for spots in the Super Eagles Team B, also known as the CHAN Eagles, as they prepared for the 2025 CHAN qualifier against Ghana. The former international, fondly referred to as Cerezo, shared his impressions of the home-based players following their initial training camp ahead of the December match against Ghana.
The invited NPFL players underwent a two-day camp in Abuja on Wednesday and Thursday under Eguavoen’s supervision. After the first phase of training, the coach expressed his satisfaction with the players’ technical skills.
“Very impressive; only two training sessions, but you can see that technically they are very good,” Eguavoen told NFF TV. However, he acknowledged that there is still more work to be done to achieve the desired results. “We still have a lot of work to do because they are coming from different clubs. We have to find a way to blend them into one unit,” he explained.
Nigeria will face Ghana in the first leg of their CHAN Qualifiers from December 20 to 22, 2024, with the second leg scheduled for a week later in Nigeria. The winner over two legs will qualify for the 2025 CHAN, which will take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
In a statement from the NFF media, it was confirmed that the home-based Super Eagles have been released to rejoin their clubs ahead of this weekend’s Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 10 matches. The team will regroup after the matches to continue preparations at the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja for the crucial qualifier against the Black Stars of Ghana.
Nigeria missed the last two editions of the Championship of Africa Nations Cup, a tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for players in their domestic leagues.
