NSC, NRS seek waivers for importers over single window delays

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) and the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) have urged shipping companies and terminal operators to grant waivers to importers and clearing agents affected by delays linked to the implementation of the National Single Window at the nation’s seaports.

The appeal was made during a stakeholders’ engagement held on Friday at the NSC headquarters in Lagos, where industry players reviewed the progress and challenges of the newly introduced system.

Speaking at the meeting, the Executive Secretary of the NSC, Dr Akutah Pius, said although the initiative marked a major milestone for the maritime industry, its rollout had been accompanied by initial operational challenges affecting cargo clearance timelines.

He explained that the system, which became operational on March 27, 2026, was designed to streamline port processes, enhance transparency and improve efficiency across the sector.

Akutah noted that stakeholders must work collectively to address the teething problems associated with the reform to ensure seamless implementation and long-term success.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr Zach Adedeji, appealed to shipping companies and terminal operators to grant waivers on demurrage and storage charges incurred during the delay period.

“There have been some single window induced delays, and that has led to delays in the clearance of cargoes. That is why we are here to seek your support while we are passing through this initial stage,” he said.

Industry stakeholders acknowledged the benefits of the initiative but raised concerns over delays and technical issues, expressing confidence that with improved collaboration and system upgrades, the platform would deliver long-term gains.
