KWASUTH nurses join nationwide seven-day warning strike

By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin –

Nurses at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), Ilorin, have joined their counterparts across federal health institutions in a seven-day warning strike which began on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

The industrial action, led by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), is to press home demands including the upward review of shift allowances, adjustment of uniform allowances, a separate salary structure for nurses, increased call duty allowance, mass employment of nurses, and the creation of a Nursing Department in the Federal Ministry of Health.

During a visit to KWASUTH by Western Post on Thursday, only doctors were seen attending to patients, as no nurse was present on the hospital wards.

A patient’s mother, Mrs. Kike Alabi, whose toddler is on admission, said doctors have been the only medical personnel attending to her child since the previous day.

Similarly, Mr. Ade Aderibigbe, who accompanied his brother to the hospital, confirmed that nurses have been absent and doctors have had to manage the full burden of care.

The hospital wards appeared deserted, with none of the usual nursing activity that marks a typical clinical day, reflecting the impact of the total strike action.

The nurses’ union had earlier issued a 15-day ultimatum to the federal government on July 14, 2025, to meet their demands or face industrial action.
