Ogun police begin crackdown on vehicles without valid number plates
The Ogun State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation against vehicles operating with covered, obscured, defaced, concealed, unauthorised or no registration number plates as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state.
The exercise, which follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is aimed at enhancing public safety and preventing criminal elements from exploiting vehicle anonymity to perpetrate crimes.
As directed by the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders are to enforce the directive and impound vehicles found in violation of the law.
According to the command, the enforcement also targets vehicles displaying fake, improperly issued, altered or otherwise unauthorised registration number plates. Such vehicles will be subjected to thorough investigations in line with existing regulations.
The police, however, clarified that the directive exempts only vehicles officially authorised to display flags in accordance with established government protocols.
The command advised motorists, transport operators, fleet owners and other road users to ensure that their vehicles carry valid, duly issued and clearly visible registration number plates at all times to avoid sanctions.
Additionally, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that the command was not intending to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to improve the ability of security agencies to identify vehicles, investigate crimes and track criminal suspects.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property in Ogun State and urged residents to comply with the directive while continuing to provide credible and timely information to security agencies. Officers deployed for the operation, the command added, have been instructed to conduct themselves professionally and within the ambit of the law.
