Ondo activates mobile courts to curb environmental pollution

The Ondo State Government has intensified enforcement of environmental sanitation laws, warning residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and construction materials in drainage channels, waterways and along major roads across the state.

The renewed crackdown was announced by the Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Special Duties and Strategy, Gani Ajowa, during an inspection tour of several areas in Akure, the state capital.

Ajowa said the government was determined to ensure strict compliance with environmental regulations, particularly during the rainy season when blocked drains and waterways often contribute to flooding and erosion.

He condemned the practice of dumping refuse in gutters and drainage channels, describing it as a violation of environmental laws and a major threat to public safety and infrastructure.

According to him, obstructed waterways increase the risk of flooding, endanger lives and property, and undermine government efforts to manage environmental challenges across the state.

The governor’s aide stressed that environmental sanitation is a collective responsibility and urged residents to support government initiatives by disposing of waste properly and keeping drainage systems free of debris.

As part of efforts to enforce compliance, Ajowa announced the activation of mobile courts to prosecute offenders, warning that anyone found violating environmental laws would face legal sanctions.

Also speaking, the Technical Assistant to the Governor on Erosion Control and Flood-Related Matters, Elisha Ebijimi, appealed to residents of Akure, Odigbo and Ondo town to desist from dumping refuse, sand, gravel and other materials on roads and in drainage channels, noting that such practices have become major contributors to flooding in many parts of the state.
