Ondo approves 240kW solar project for medical university teaching hospital

The Ondo State Government has approved the installation of a 240-kilowatt solar power system at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo, to ensure reliable electricity supply and improve healthcare delivery across the state.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, disclosed this on Wednesday, saying Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa approved the immediate commencement of the project to address rising electricity costs at the teaching hospital.

Alabi said the initiative aligns with the administration’s commitment to providing affordable and accessible healthcare, noting that the alternative energy solution would reduce the hospital’s electricity expenses and free up more resources for healthcare services.

“To achieve the goal of affordable and quality healthcare services, Mr Governor has approved this alternative energy solution to reduce the hospital’s electricity costs.

“This strategic investment will ease the financial burden of energy expenses while enabling the institution to channel more resources towards improved healthcare delivery,” he said.

The commissioner explained that the 240kW solar installation would provide a more reliable power supply, support 24-hour healthcare services, protect sensitive medical equipment and enhance patient care.

He disclosed that mobilisation to the project site had commenced following the governor’s approval, adding that the state government is targeting completion and commissioning of the project within the first month of the last quarter of the year.

Alabi described the project as another major investment in the state’s healthcare sector and commended Aiyedatiwa for prioritising infrastructure that would improve service delivery.
