OPC leader, nine others docked for alleged attempted murder of monarch

A factional leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) in Ondo State, Tolulope Alo, also known as Asamo, has been arraigned alongside nine others before an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court.

They were accused of attempting to assassinate the Obaloogun of Igoba land, Oba Adeniyi John Adinlewa, during a violent attack on the community.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 43, face eight counts, including conspiracy, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms, and breach of peace.

Police prosecutor Inspector Sulaiman Adebayo said the defendants invaded the Igoba community between October 1 and 2, 2025, attacking residents and trying to kill the monarch.

He said the group was armed with guns, daggers, and charms and destroyed crops and valuables belonging to some residents.

Adebayo asked the court to remand the suspects at the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Defence counsel, Femi Emodamori, objected to the request, saying the crisis was over a land dispute.

The magistrate, Damilola Sekoni, ordered that the defendants remain in police custody for one day and adjourned the case to October 10 for hearing.
