Oyo teachers begin indefinite strike over abducted colleagues, pupils

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services indefinitely beginning Monday, June 1, over the continued abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The union said the action was prompted by growing concerns over the safety of teachers and learners following the attack on schools in Oriire on May 15, 2026, during which gunmen abducted dozens of victims.
According to the NUT, teachers in public schools across the state have been instructed to remain at home until all abducted colleagues and students regain their freedom.
The affected schools include Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School; and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, where armed men reportedly abducted 39 pupils and seven teachers, including a school principal.
Reports also indicated that two teachers lost their lives during the attack, a development that has heightened anxiety among education stakeholders and intensified calls for improved security in schools.
The union said the industrial action forms part of a broader nationwide response, which will also feature solidarity rallies in state capitals on June 2 to draw attention to the plight of the abducted teachers and students.
The Oyo State chapter of the NUT has confirmed its compliance with the directive, urging members to stay away from classrooms while discussions with government authorities and security agencies continue. The union maintained that the situation has disrupted academic activities and created widespread fear among teachers.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) in Oyo State has distanced itself from the planned protest, advising its members to remain focused on academic activities while pursuing dialogue with relevant authorities. The NUT, however, continues to demand urgent government intervention and the safe return of all abducted teachers and students.
