Police debunk viral terror alert in Abuja, arrest suspect
The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed as false a viral video alleging a terrorist attack in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, stating that no such incident occurred.
In a statement issued on Friday, the police described the video as misleading and malicious, noting that it was deliberately fabricated to cause panic and undermine public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.
According to the force, preliminary investigations showed that the footage used in the video was sourced from online platforms and manipulated to create a false narrative of an attack in the capital city.
The police also announced the arrest of one Pam Joseph in connection with the creation and dissemination of the content, following intelligence gathering and digital forensic investigations.
The force warned that while citizens have the right to freedom of expression, such rights do not extend to spreading misinformation capable of threatening public peace and national security.
It advised members of the public to verify information before sharing and to avoid engaging in activities that could incite fear or disorder.
The suspect, the police said, is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining public order and national security, adding that they would continue to monitor digital platforms and take action against purveyors of false information.
